Single-use kitchen tools like can openers should just work. They have one job, and they need to do it well. They should be intuitive and effective. Think about it. Would you use a whisk whose wires tangle after each use, or a spatula that warped each time you flipped a pancake? Probably not. What about a can opener that never fully opens cans (it happens!)? Absolutely not. That’s why when we set out to test can openers recently, we prioritized those criteria.
We evaluated 10 can openers—four traditional manual models, three automatic, and three safety—and scored them on efficacy, ease of use, hand strength needed, and more. The testers consisted of our five viral “grandfluencers”—our followers on Instagram and TikTok practically demanded more content with them!—and three CR staffers who evaluated them in our lab. Testers had a lot to say about this utilitarian product.
