SpaceX – Starship – Starship Test Flight 12 – Pad 2 – Starbase, Texas – May 22, 2026

maxresdefault

Launch Date: May 22, 2026 (CDT)
Launch Time: 5:30 p.m. CDT, 6:30 p.m. EDT, 2230 UTC (May 23, 00:30 CEST)
Launch Window: Open until 7:00 p.m. CDT
Status: Successful lift-off, successful hot staging. Super Heavy Booster lost 3 Raptor engines during lift-off. Boostback burn was to short, so an uncontrolled “splash-down” in the Gulf of Mexico. Starship lost one Vacuum Raptor-3 engine, but operates nominal. 22 Starlink Demo satellites deployed. No Raptor re-ignition test in space was performed. Starship heat-shield operated very well during re-entry, did the belly-flip and made a splashdown controlled upright in the Indian Ocean, west of Australia. A lot of milestones have been reached successfully with Flight Test 12. Next ahead!

Launch Provider: SpaceX
Launcher System: Starship-Super Heavy (Prototype) – (Vehicles: Starship 39 & Booster 19)
Mission: Starship Test Flight 12 – Maybe one orbit, otherwise suborbital
Flight: 1st flight for Super Heavy Booster 19 – 1st flight for Starship 39
Launch Location: Pad 2, Starbase, Texas, USA

A documentary by SpaceX “Test like you Fly” about the Starship you will find on our channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qq3kHVxCejM&t=5s

The twelfth flight test of Starship is preparing to launch as soon as May 21 (CDT). The launch window will open at 5:30 p.m. CDT, 6:30 p.m. EDT, 22:30 UTC (May 22, 00:30 CEST).

As is the case with all developmental testing, the schedule is dynamic and likely to change.

The flight test’s primary goal will be to demonstrate each of these new pieces in the flight environment for the first time, with each element of the Starship architecture featuring significant redesigns to enable full and rapid reuse that incorporate learnings from years of development and test.

The booster’s primary test objective will be executing a successful launch, ascent, stage separation, boostback burn, and landing burn at an offshore landing point in the Gulf of Mexico. As this is the first flight test of a significantly redesigned vehicle, the booster will not attempt a return to the launch site for catch.

The Starship upper stage will target multiple in-space and reentry objectives, including the deployment of 22 Starlink simulators, similar in size to next-generation Starlink satellites. The last two satellites deployed will scan Starship’s heat shield and transmit imagery down to operators to test methods of analyzing Starship’s heat shield readiness for return to launch site on future missions. Several tiles on Starship have been painted white to simulate missing tiles and serve as imaging targets in the test. The Starlink simulators will be on the same suborbital trajectory as Starship. A relight of a single Raptor engine while in space is also planned.

For Starship entry, a single heat shield tile has been intentionally removed to measure the aerodynamic load differences on adjacent tiles when there is a tile missing. Finally, the ship will perform experimental actions tested on previous flight tests, including a maneuver to intentionally stress the structural limits of the vehicle’s rear flaps and a dynamic banking maneuver to mimic the trajectory that future missions returning to Starbase will fly.

Starship Flight 12 – Starship V3

Starship Flight 12 introduces the next major generation of SpaceX’s launch system: Starship V3, Super Heavy V3, Raptor 3 engines, and the new Starbase Pad 2.

The upgraded Super Heavy V3 features larger and stronger grid fins, a new integrated hot-stage design, redesigned engine-area shielding, improved quick-disconnect systems, and a major redesign of the fuel transfer system feeding the 33 Raptor engines.

Starship V3 receives a major propulsion and systems redesign, including increased tank volume, improved reaction control, upgraded flap actuation, long-duration flight capabilities, and hardware for future ship-to-ship docking and propellant transfer.

The new Raptor 3 engines provide more thrust with a simplified design, reduced mass, integrated sensors, and improved thermal protection.

The upgraded avionics system includes around 60 custom units, high-voltage power distribution, improved autonomous navigation, microgravity propellant-level sensing, and roughly 50 camera views with redundant Starlink connectivity.

Flight 12 will also be the first launch from Starbase Pad 2, which includes faster propellant loading, redesigned chopsticks, stronger quick-disconnect arms, a new launch mount, and improved flame-management systems.

Together, these upgrades are intended to move Starship closer to its core goals: rapid reuse, orbital refueling, Starlink deployment, and future cargo and crew missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
