Adam and Jamie took on the hands-free driving debate with more rigor than any previous test, starting at Naval Air Station Alameda on a course neither of them had seen before, with one driving hands-free first and then handheld and the other doing the inverse while being asked questions designed to engage different areas of the brain simultaneously used for driving, and then taking the whole experiment to Stanford University’s Automotive Innovation Facility where they ran 30 volunteers through a driving simulator with an eye-tracking system measuring exactly how long each person looked away from the road during both techniques, finding that only one volunteer per group successfully completed the run, that the failure rates were nearly identical across both conditions, and that the eye-tracking data showed drivers spent the same amount of time looking away from the road regardless of whether the phone was in their hand or not — confirming that making a call while driving is just as cognitively dangerous whether your hands are free or not.
