Fifty years back, in a single mid-day in Paris, the wine globe obtained turned upside down. A British white wine vendor called Steven Spurrier pitched a handful of Californian wines versus the finest of France in a blind sampling. The French were degraded– and the Americans took the gold in both whites and reds.
Australia wasn’t invited.
For the 50th wedding anniversary, we spent $15,000 flying to California to ask the question we’ve never had the ability to address: what happens if Spurrier had come southern in ’76? What would certainly the Aussie line-up have looked like? And how would it have gone?
We asked Brian Croser, Andrew Caillard MW, and Max Allen– 3 of the most respected voices in Australian wine– to independently tell us which Aussie red wines would’ve made the sampling. We located the initial Californian white wines that beat France. And we rested them down before 3 entirely independent tastes buds: Rajat Parr, one of America’s the majority of significant sommeliers; Peter Koff MW, the cult blind cup; and ourselves.
