A tilt table test is a diagnostic tool commonly used to evaluate conditions of orthostatic intolerance, such as postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and vasovagal syncope. The test works by safely recreating the changes in posture that can trigger symptoms like dizziness, fainting, or rapid heartbeat.
During the procedure, a patient is strapped to a special table that can be tilted from a lying position to an upright one, usually at an angle of about 60–80 degrees. This controlled movement allows clinicians to observe how the body responds to standing without the patient actually bearing weight. Heart rate, blood pressure, and symptoms are monitored closely throughout.
In people with POTS, the tilt often reveals a significant increase in heart rate without a corresponding drop in blood pressure. In vasovagal syncope, it may trigger a sudden fall in blood pressure and/or heart rate, leading to fainting. By reproducing these responses in a safe, monitored environment, the tilt table test provides valuable insight into why a patient may be experiencing unexplained fainting or dizziness, guiding more accurate diagnosis and treatment.
