How To Remove Various Wine Stains

Spilling wine on your clothing or on a carpet is one of those horror moments. First there is a pause whilst everyone puts down their wine glasses, considers what has happened, and then the suggestions start. Everyone has an opinion on the best action to take, and it’s hard to know which is right. These are the best options available to you should you spill various wines

Red wine. This is the dreaded one as red wine stains can cause some serious damage if not handled right. There has long been a myth that the best action to take if you spill red wine is to pour white wine all over it.What works a whole lot better is pouring over the stain a mix of talcum powder and a little ammonia. Leave for 2-3 hours for the powder to absorb all the wine and dry out and then hoover it up and stain should be gone. White wine vinegar is another substance that works well on red wine stains as it stops the binding of the tannin to the fabric and makes it easier to clean off. Leave again for 30min and then mop up with hot water and detergent

White wine stains. There is a great deal less tannin (wine colouring) in white wine and so this means it is less of a headache when spilt. To lift it off cloths or carpet just soak in warm water with a bit of washing detergent in, and then mop it up with a cloth. You can then use the talcum powder technique afterwards to get rid of any wine smell.

Champagne. If you spill champagne on your clothing or carpet it’s not the end of the world to leave it a little while before mopping it up. This is due to the fact champagne as lots of bubbles which actively break down dirt that is ingrained in fabric. Putting glass vases or crystal vases over the spill will keep it from drying out and the cleaning effect will go on for longer.
