Uncorked: The Novice’s Guide to Wine
Uncorked: The Novice’s Guide to Wine

Henry Goldkamp Trying to help you out here! Save yourself the money and the one hour it takes to read this book. I don't consider myself any sort of expert on wine, nor am I any type of lofty intellectual, but this book is written in the same manner I imagine children might learn about wine. The chapters average around 2 pages, in large font, and have no real direction or order to them. I learned nothing new or valuable, and I hardly know anything about wine. I've learned much, much more in the Wine for Dummies book I purchased...

Rishu Generally, grapes and yeast. The grapes are crushed to get the juice, yeast is added to eat the sugars in the juice and convert it to alcohol and CO2. The fermentation also yields (in tiny amounts) other compounds that add to the complexity of the flavors. Also, consuming the sugar, it is no longer sweet like grape juice by itself. A sweet wine is generally one that's had the fermentation stopped before all the sugars were consumed. There are lots of wild yeasts out there, on the grapes, floating in the air, etc. The majority of the time, wine makers will use sulfites to kill the wild yeasts and then add their own in order to have control over what the final result will be like...alcohol content, flavors, clarity, etc. It lends to a more consistet and predictable result.

Brian Some. Let's take a step back. Going from a tumbler to a wine glass does several things: moves your hand away from the bowl (unless you cup it, which you shouldn't) to eliminate hand warmth, gives you a smooth, flowing curve of glass to swirl and pour smoothly and creates an area above the wine for aeration and nosing. This change in glassware is big and pretty important. Going from a generic wine glass to a red/white wine glass improves the pour speed, proper aeration (big for red, small for white) and where the wine first hits your tongue. This is a smaller improvement, but a good one. Going from a generic "red" to a merlot vs cab sav glass can get somewhat expensive and really is not important for casual wine drinkers. The only exceptions would be flutes for sparkling wine, but even this isn't absolutely necessary. I drink quite a bit of wine and I have two sizes of reds (big and bigger) and I only switch to the really big ones for really spicy reds (cab franc, malbec), and then only if I feel bothered to dig them out of the cupboard. Now for your question: thin glass is lighter and generally means a higher quality of manufacture and design. It will change temperature slightly faster (air temp, allow more hand warmth to transfer). Is it meaningful? Not particularly. I got some nice red glasses as a present and prefer them because they're made better and they swirl nicer. I don't think they do very much for the wine itself, though.

Ldyvette79 Goose tends to be fatty, so choose and acidic wine to cut the richness. I like a sauvignon blanc for a white or burgundy for a red. If you are having the goose for Christmas, you could also served mulled wine. A Cranberry Blush is also interesting, if available in your area.

wineblogger I like "It's Cocktail Time" answer. Kendall-Jackson wines are one of the best value in today's market. You can also try Kendall-Jackson Vintner's Reserve Sauvignon Blanc which can be found between $ 10 - $ 12. Weatherman I'll explain it in the simplest way I can White wine - made from any colour grape, but the skins & pips are sieved out of the juice when it is pressed Red wine - made from red skinned grapes, the skins and pips are left in after pressing to give the wine colour & tannin Rose wine - either made as a red wine, but the skins & pips are taken out earlier than with a red wine OR a blend of red & white wine Champagne - A white wine that has extra yeast added once the initial fermentation has finished to produce the fizz it has. Temperature - White & Rose are normally served lightly chilled, though some very sweet white wines are served at the same temperature as red ... Red wine should NOT be served at room temperature, it should be served around 55 - 60 F ... Champagne and other sparkling wines should be server well chilled Once opened - 2 or 3 days, up to a week if you have a wine saver. Sparkling wine will be flat though after this time and should be drunk as soon as it is opened

urbancoyote It is called red wine because it is made from fermented red, plum or purplish grapes. Wine made from white or light green grapes is called "white wine."

tienna It is impossible that it was wine, because Jesus cannot/did not lie. 1Peter 2:22. He said he would not drink 'this product of the vine'..until he arrives in the Kingdom of God, and the next day, while dying, he drank wine. This proves, it was not wine. Luke 22:17, John19:29,30. And consider, unleavened bread represented his sinless body, so only grape juice would picture his sinless blood, not fermented wine.

oikos Much of the taste of beer comes from the hops, a lot from the malt. Wine is made from fruits, vegetables, etc, not from grain. It will not taste like beer. What you can do is drink beers that have not been made with hops, assuming you can find them. Spruce beer is one possibility. Griuts are beers made with herbs, rather than hops. You may have to buddy up to an experiment-minded home-brewer to get any, though.

Spyderbear Cooking wine is simply cheap wine that has had salt added to it so that it's no longer drinkable. First of all, salted wine would make salted vinegar. And cheap (tasting ) wine would make cheap (tasting) vinegar. Invest in a moderately priced but flavorful wine for your vinegar making to get you the best results.

Buy towels, pot holders, etc. with grapes. 4. Set various wine decor items around. Wine boxes, etc. 5. Use 2 large wine bottles (1.5 size or larger) as book ends for your cookbooks. Mark table grapes, simply means that it is not sparkling (think Champagne) or a sweet dessert wine (think Port). Other then that, it should give you some idea about the types of grapes used or the type of wine (heck at least red or white is always there somewhere). You can also look at the website of the producer/vintner/winery to see.
