Types of Absinthe Spoons
Absinthe spoons, cuilleres, were introduced in the 1880s to make Absinthe preparation easier. In olden times perforated cups on Absinthe glasses were used. Sugar and water drip into the absinthe through the slotted part of these spoons.
Absinthe spoons or cuilleres are designed in numerous shapes and size prepared from several metals. There are over 375 varieties of Absinthe spoon according to Marie-Claude Delahaye.
The French Pelle group of cuilleres includes the pretty "les feuilles d’Absinthe" which have got Absinthe foliage designs on them. The popular spoon design featuring the Eiffel Tower was designed to celebrate the inauguration of the Eiffel Tower in 1889.
"les Grilles" or "Les Grillagees" is the second group of Absinthe spoons. A person can get the "Les cuilleres" which contains designs with a long handle and a cradle to hold the cube of sugar.
"Les Cuilleres de Poilus" is one of the most famous Absinthe spoons. A Poilu was a French soldier from the Great War and these Cuillere spoons were fashioned by soldiers at war using materials which were close at hand - shell casings, aluminum, tin and brass. These spoons were only made at the start of the war because Absinthe was banned in France in 1915. These spoons were designed by the soldiers to fit their own drinking cups. Today these beautiful and unique spoons are categorized as highly collectible antiques.
Absinthe was banned because of the alleged psychedelic and psychoactive effects of thujone, the chemical found in the herb wormwood which is a major ingredient in Absinthe. After being proved of having no more harmful than any other strong liquors Absinthe was legalized in various countries.
The Absinthe Ritual
There is a ritual to be followed by lovers of the Green Fairy (Absinthe). To make an ideal Absinthe one will require following items
– Buy an Absinthe spoon
– Need of an Absinthe Glass
– Iced Water
An Absinthe fountain, brouiller or carafe can be used for the water according to a few people.
One can make Absinthe in the following manner :-
– The amount of Absinthe taken in the glass should be 25-50ml.
– A sugar cube should be placed on the Absinthe spoon kept motionless on the glass.
– Drip the iced water slowly onto the sugar cube. From the bottom of the glass the louche arises.
Louching or clouding is the result of insolubility of the essential oils in water. The finished drink should appear milky or cloudy.
Depending on taste the ratio of water and Absinthe should lie between 3:1 and 5:1.
