Most wine trade professionals are either sommeliers or have even more experience and knowledge of the wine world. If you consider that a wine buyer for a supermarket chain is responsible for at least 10% of the overall business you can see how important their knowledge of wines, types and taste are responsible for this sectors success.

For an employer to insure any part of your body is flattering. When Angela Mount was working for supermarket chain Somerfield such was her positive impact on their business they called their insurers. Angela had to have a meeting where she was told her nose was worth $20 million to her employer. Achoo. Bless you. The story of the record breaking valuation hit the headlines world wide. Angela is renowned as a wine expert buyer who changed the wine world in such a way in the UK that high quality wines became available on the high street. She has recently opened a wine business in the UK.

Somerfield estimated she was in charge of 10% of their total business such was the power of her nose. She has continued her wine consultancy elsewhere and has also moved into coffee and wants to improve the taste and aroma of coffee with her record breaking olfactory bulb. How much could her tongue be worth?

Marlene Dietrich insured her voice for $1 million and Egon Ronay of the dining guide insured his palate for Euros 200,000. Formula One driving star Fernando Alonso had his thumbs covered for £9 million. Since then other noses have come up for protection but none have been valued at $20 million. That legend still belongs to Angela.

Just to prove to you that wine tasting is not made up and that wine professionals can have brains as well tuned as the best perfumers or expert antique dealers you will need to check out my new book Nutriwine. A study has taken place which shows the parts of sommeliers brains use for their wine vocation as being bigger and more active than neophytes.
