(SAVANNAH, Ga.)-  If public interest on social networking sites and hearsay proves true, more than 100 people may attend a charity wine tasting event at Savannah Wine Cellar, Thursday, August 16, according to organizer Cindy Burns of the Coastal Center for Developmental Services (CCDS); the non-profit organization that will acquire the proceeds from the event.

“The Savannah Wine Cellar is a boutique wine shop… and the unique thing about us is that we have these tasting machines that allow people to try before they buy,” said Michael Jaeger, managing partner of the new business in the Twelve Oaks Shopping Center on Abercorn Street.

Jaeger said customers can get a 1 or 2 oz. taste of any of the 32 wines they have on sample.  The store stocks no less than 250 types of wine, but a smaller selection of 32 wines is available for sample tasting for those who are old enough to consume alcohol.

“It’s brand new here in Savannah,” added Jaeger of the machines that dispense samples.

The CCDS gives individuals with developmental disabilities the skills to get and retain jobs in the Coastal Georgia community.

Workers with CCDS try to pair people who are “differently abled” with companies that can best-utilize the worker’s personality and abilities.  So many “jobs” for the developmentally disabled can turn into “careers” when a good job-employee marriage is made.

Tillia Bridges is the most recent success story to be highlighted by a partnership between WJCL-abc and the CCDS.  Bridges initially thought a job in the food services industry would be best, but after some career coaching and training, she is now very happy with her position as a records keeper in a doctor’s office.  The job placement help from the CCDS and time with mentors at the medical clinic will probably lend itself to Bridges having a career and not a dead-end job in a sector she only guessed she’d like.

If you would like to support the CCDS and you enjoy learning about wine, visit the wine tasting benefit event happening Thursday, August 16 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Savannah Wine Cellar in the Twelve Oaks Shopping Center on Abercorn Street in Savannah.

Savannah Wine Cellar has invited two, local “wine gurus” Michael Ambrose and Stan Ray to pour and talk to the guests about each of the 7 wines.

The cost per person for the tasting is $15/person or $25/couple.  Proceeds will go to CCDS.

Also, the catering division of CCDS is chipping in to make the event a little different.  The staff is creating a trio of sweet treats to be served with the wine.

WJCL’s “Good Morning Savannah” staff members devoured the tray of goodies Cindy Burns of CCDS brought to a live interview segment at the studios last week.
