Absinthe has become once again a popular alcoholic drink after being legalized in the USA and other countries. Many young people are trying it for the first time and knocking it back without any consideration of its alcohol content. Learning about Absinthe proof?

A blend of herbs along with wormwood (artemisia absinthium), aniseed and fennel is used in the manufacturing of Absinthe. The Green Fairy, La Fee Verte is another name for Absinthe due to emerald green coloring of classic verte styles of Absinthe.

Absinthe is usually consumed diluted with iced water according to the Ritual. There is a louche effect when water is dripped over a sugar lump on a slotted spoon and into the Absinthe.

As Absinthe contained wormwood so it was restricted in the early 1900s. Dr Valentin Magnan tested worwmood on guinea pigs in 1845 and found that a guinea pig given wormwood oilhad convulsions, whereas, a guinea pig given alcohol just got drunk. According to the tests done by Magnan during 1872 thujone was declared to be far more dangerous than ethanol (alcohol). He and others in the medical profession were convinced that thujone was psychoactive and caused psychedelic effects. Absinthe was unauthorized because of this.

Due to similarities in the structures of a thujone molecule and THC from the drug cannabis they acted in a same manner.

People have now understood that all these claims are inaccurate and false. Thujone is not like THC, although it does act on the GABA receptors of the brain, when taken in large amounts. Research prove that Absinthe contains very small amounts of thujone which is not harmful. When anyone drinks heavy amount of Absinthe he dies of alcohol poisoning before getting affected from thujone!

However Absinthe will not cause hallucination but one should be careful while drinking it as it is a highly alcoholic drink.
